Week’s events to focus on sustainability

Posted on Thursday, April 15, 2021

Three artists will be displaying their upcycled work during next week's Sustainability Week

The college’s annual Sustainability Fair fell victim to COVID-19 for the past two years, but that hasn’t stopped organizers from finding creative ways to celebrate Earth Day 2021.

“Last year was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, so we had a month-long online film festival to replace the outdoor fair,” said Dr. Elizabeth Appleby, Professor of French and chair of the college’s Sustainability Council. “We had close to 200 participants, and we hope that even more students will participate this year in the activities we’ve planned.”

An Upcycled Art display in collaboration with Trash to Treasures will be set up on the main floor of Lewis Library. “Trash to Treasures” is an organization and online community platform dedicated to helping people minimize consumer waste and bypass landfills by transforming consumer byproducts (trash) into creative functional or artistic solutions.

Local artist Maureen Gay, who was the winner of the Trash to Treasures art competition last year, will have two works of upcycled jewelry,” said Dr. Appleby. “Leah Jeffrey, a scrap-metal artist, will be showing a flying bird made from discarded bicycle parts and old cutlery.”

There also will be one interactive piece set up on the grassy section between the library and the campus garden.

“Mitch Kernodle, who owns Eagle River Forge in Hogansville, has created bells from old oxygen tanks that students will be able to play,” said Dr. Appleby. “We had to work with National and the grounds crew to avoid underground irrigation pipes because the piece needs to be anchored into the ground with 16-foot stakes. This was definitely a fun project to work on.”

An online Sustainability Literacy Survey will help organizers determine what students understand about this broad topic, according to Dr. Patti Marchesi, Professor of English and organizer of the project.

It's a multiple choice, interactive survey that gives immediate feedback,” she said. “For example, if students answer a question incorrectly, they learn why and are then presented with the correct answer. Sustainability literacy is becoming an important skill in the marketplace, so it's important for our students to test themselves and evaluate where they are.”

The Nuts and Bolts of Sustainability at LaGrange College will be part online quiz and part scavenger hunt. Students will be able to find answers by exploring the campus.

An online film event will feature “The Ethics of Eating.”

“We partnered with the Educated Choices Program to offer this,” Dr. Appleby said. “This will include many of the topics included in the previous presentations.”

Students will explore the impacts of food choices on human health, the environment and animals in modern animal agriculture. Solutions for reducing the risk of deadly diseases and viruses will be considered, ways to create a more sustainable planet will be investigated and new food technologies that may address the negative impacts of our current food system will be explored.

On Wednesday, the college will partner with Chattahoochee Riverkeeper for a cleanup at West Point Lake.

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper hosted 34 cleanups in 2020 and with the assistance of more than 1,800 volunteers, removed 100,325 pounds (more than 50 tons) of trash from the lake, river and area creeks.

“Our waterways provide us with fresh drinking water, great recreational opportunities like canoeing and fishing and serve as a pleasant respite from our busy day-to-day lives,” said Dr. Appleby. “This is your opportunity to help protect one of our most precious resources by volunteering to help us protect the Chattahoochee River Basin.”

Participants should gather at Pyne Road Park at 3 p.m. They are reminded to not attend if they are experiencing any signs of illness or suspect that they may have been exposed to COVID-19. Following CDC guidelines on social distancing, there will be a six-foot recommended distance between volunteers, and masks will be required whenever social distancing is not possible.

Volunteers are asked to wear rubber boots, water shoes or old sneakers – no flip flops or open-toed sandals. Appropriate clothing includes long pants and things that can get wet and dirty. Clean clothes and shoes should be taken for the journey home.

Registration is requested.
